Panzer General Online is the latest offering in Ubisoft’s free-to-play lineup. Like several of the other games in this lineup, it is being developed by Ubisoft’s own Blue Byte studio (Anno Online, Silent Hunter Online and the Settlers Online).
Since its debut in 1994, the Panzer General series has been well-known for its head-to-head play and great military strategy. Panzer General Online is free-to-play and browser-based, both a first for the series. Players are given deep control as generals over their armies, being able to customize their army and command their units including infantry, tanks, artillery, and airplanes.
The army customization consists of elements similar to trading card games and miniature war games. Players can collect and trade units in the form of realistic virtual miniatures. Legendary units from each nation await your discovery. Examples include the Tiger tank and Nebelwerfer rocket launcher on the German side and the Sherman and Pershing tanks on the American side. Players can also construct their own decks of Command Cards that can turn the tide of battle by ordering tactical unit maneuvers and calling in air strikes.
Combat consists of intense battles requiring smart strategy and tactics. Turn-based battles take place on the newly designed Battlefield — a hexagonal grid that supports two full armies across multiple terrain types. Panzer General Online features epic and historically inspired single-player campaigns that serve as advanced tutorials. Players can direct American troops from the landing in Sicily to the battle of Monte Cassino in the Italian Campaign. They can also lead German units through battles like the Allied landing in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
The real focus of the game is its multiplayer . Players can play head-to-head across three different game modes. All three will test players to determine which ones know best how to command their units. The different modes include a quick skirmish mode, Survival, and Ranked. In Survival mode, each victory a player earns increases their possible reward. In Ranked, players will compete to rise up the leaderboards.
Panzer General Online is playable directly in your browser without any download. Despite its free-to-play nature, strategy is still king. Tactical skill is more important than the luck of the draw, an important distinction for strategy gamers. The team at Blue Byte have designed Panzer General Online to appeal to all fans of strategy games — those who already love the Panzer General series and those who are experiencing it for the first time.
