In response to the F2P trend in the MMO business community, Trion Worlds finally decides to make RIFT free-to-play and the free to play version is now officially called RIFT Lite. The switch of business model is said to have been conceived for quite a long time, according to RIFT team.
“We know that the business landscape has changed over the years”, Bill Fisher, a creative director of RIFT explained, “There has certainly been a stigma over the years regarding free-to-play games, but that stigma is going away every day as more top quality games are released with quality F2P models that don’t gouge the user but instead provide fun environments and good value.”
Among these quality titles are Tera Rising, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest II, and Star Wars: The Old Republic etc. To catch up with them, Trion Worlds announced yesterday its plan open RIFT to gamers for free on June 12 after some careful preparation for the business model transition, promising no tricks and no traps.
Players will be able to roam the whole world of RIFT, exploring every quest, chronicle, dungeon and continent for free. Without paying a dime, gamers can level to 60 smoothly while earning the best gears in the game. According to Fisher, the best gears will always have to be earned through playing RIFT, which aims to make sure the game is truly a F2P game rather than a pay-to-win one.
However, to generate revenue, RIFT will feature an expanded store with a completely revamped roster of items, including new mounts, costumes, role slots, storage space, as well as boosts that can increase gamers’ XP gain and token gain.
Even as the game is going free-to-play, there is still a subscription choice. Subscribers will get a Patron status that gives them a host of special benefits and abilities. They can earn additional 15% currency, gain 10% more mount speed and more.
Whatever options players make, they are going to play the same game. The whole thing is about change of business model rather than moderation of the heart of the game, which makes the game essentially fun. Coming along with the transition is RIFT’s Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault, which opens the full 60-level Dendrome together with some new dynamic content including Strongholds, a new Chronicle and more.
Trion Worlds revealed they had already started to work on Update 2.4, which will include a new 20-player raids. The team says they are going to add new content and make constant changes to keep the game fresh.
