Bandai Namco Games has united the teams behind Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Gundam Extreme VS to create a brand new franchise — Rise of Incarnates. As you’d expect from the team’s respectable pedigree, Rise is a fighting game. More specifically, it’s a free-to-play, 3D arena-based, third-person brawler.
Bandai Namco is calling the new franchise the next big step in expanding their footprint in the free-to-play gaming space. It’s clear that the company is seriously investing in Rise of Incarnates to ensure it provides a great player experience. The in-game universe has been fleshed out and each character has a well-developed and unique backstory. The first issue of a digital comic book set in the game’s universe is already available for free on the game’s official website.
The game takes place on Earth in a time where incarnates — people with powerful special abilities — roam the land. The incarnates draw power from the gods, demons, and monsters of ancient mythology. Their supernatural powers inevitably drew attention, including government registries, public fear, and authorities eager on exploiting the power of the incarnates for personal gain. One day, a voice spoke to all incarnates, informing them that they must “defeat the Sovereign of this era” to avoid their own destruction. Each incarnate interpreted the message differently and has their own personal reasons for entering the fray.
The gameplay footage quickly reveals that fighting is going to be extremely intense in Rise of Incarnates. The brawlers are insanely powerful — quite literally humans that are wielding the powers of gods and other mighty beings. Combat takes place in carefully crafted arenas based on real-world locations like New York City and Paris. Brawlers will run, jump, and fly through the arenas and engage in fierce combat both at long-range and in close-quarters.
Bandai Namco promises a multitude of playable characters. The roster is packed with diverse roles, skills, and powers that ensure a wide variety of playstyles and create exciting dynamic strategies when paired into teams. Only four characters have been revealed so far, but they already display how different each incarnate can be from the others. Dr. Gasper Watteau is an old scientist paired with the Grim Reaper. He is an incarnate terrorist with an army of zombies. Terrence Blake is incarnate-rights activist and a special type of incarnate that summons a being to augment his own powerful abilities. In Terrence’s case, he summons Ares, the god of war. Mireia Valentin is an arms dealer who can transform into the lightning-fast mother of demons, Lilith. Jedrek Tyler transformed into a ferociously violent demon called Mephistopheles after sustaining severe injuries in a street fight with a rival gang.
