RIFT Set to Go Free-to-Play on June 12

Another triple-A MMORPG goes F2P.

RIFT will go free-to-play with the launch of its next major expansion, Empyreal Assault, Trion Worlds has announced. On June 12th, you’ll be able to download and play RIFT for free, with access to every dungeon, warfront, raid and level.

“Today I am here to announce another dramatic change to RIFT – a change brought on by player feedback from surveys, community postings, in-game reports, and passionately written emails over the last two years,” writes RIFT Creative Director Bill Fisher in a letter to fans. “Starting June 12, with the release of RIFT 2.3: Empyreal Assault, RIFT is opening its business model to include Free to Play. Subscriptions will continue as an option as well for players who want additional benefits.”

You can subscribe to become a “Patron” and get perks like additional character slots, bag slots, extra currency, bonus exp, faster mounts, instant access to various NPC services and other conveniences. Free players can also buy these and other conveniences in the new RIFT Store, slated to open when the game goes free-to-play.
