What is the top free MMORPG 2014? Here is a list of the top ten best f2p MMORPGs so far. These are the most popular MMO games that have great graphics, amazing gameplay, and a friendly community. We start off with the big budget AAA games but further down we include browser games and the more quirky (but fun!), niche games.
Top Free MMORPG 2014
Part One: Triple A and Big Budget MMO Games
For the first part we list some of the top free MMORPGs that were made by well-known developers, had a long development cycle, and a big (sometimes downright lavish) budget.
Widely considered to be one of the best action MMORPGs, TERA is now free to play. TERA’s uniqueness revolves around its groundbreaking True Action Combat. This system allows the players to truly master their characters and to aim with no automatic targeting system, thus pushing the boundaries of the MMO genre. A great game for those who enjoy combat in all its forms. Since this is a rather big-budget game you can expect the client to run very smoothly with no bugs, state-of-the-art graphics, and tons of content – all of this for free.
Lord of the Rings Online
Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) is one of those games that is just consistently good. As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy series, of course I love strolling around in Middle Earth. Players can expect an epic adventure exploring a massive online world while defending the land from the Dark Lord Sauron. Players of all levels will explore incredibly detailed realms and join familiar characters in an evolving and persistent re-creation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved world. They will face the dangers Frodo and the Fellowship left behind when they began their epic journey to destroy the One Ring. Gamers can adventure solo or choose from thousands of players online to forge their own fellowships. Players, solo and fellowships alike, will be challenged by hideous monsters and minions of evil as they fight epic battles to defend Middle-earth.
Dungeons & Dragons Online
Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) is one of the best classic online RPG games today. This free-to-play MMORPG features highly customizable characters built from authentic D&D races, abilities, skills, and feats. Other features include real-time action combat, dangerous dungeons with devious traps, epic story quests, and award-winning visuals. Players who want great quests should try this one out. Unlike other games that have boring, simplistic quests like “kill ten ogres,” DDO’s quests each have a unique story with different bosses, traps, instanced dungeons, loot, etc.
Star Trek Online
Not just for Trekkies, Star Trek Online (STO) is an excellent f2p MMORPG that offers players awesome space combat, customizable spaceships, missions, player created missions (via the Foundry, a user-content creation tool), exciting PvE, and rewarding PvP. Leveling is pretty easy, too. This is a very polished game and its graphics, music, voice-acting, and gameplay are a cut above free to play MMOs. This is also one of the very few scifi themed MMOs around so this is a good choice for people who enjoy futuristic settings.
Part Two: Browser MMO Games
For part two, no long reviews since these free to play MMORPGs are all browser-based. It takes less than a minute to sign up and play these games on your browser so instead of spending 5 minutes reading reviews, why not just try it?
Drakensang Online – this is the best! This browser MMORPG offers the full MMO experience (quests, combat, PvP, crafting, dungeons, etc.) and you can play it directly on your browser with no download needed. The combat is fun, fast paced, and tactical. This is very immersive and has depth so this is for players who want to play the best browser MMORPG available.
KingsRoad – a free online action RPG that is perfect for gamers who enjoy classic role-playing games. Diablo or Torchlight fans will love this game! It can be played both solo and in co-op/multiplayer mode.
League of Angels – recently released last February 2014, LoA has turn-based combat, stunning hand-drawn art, quests, PvP, dungeons, and more. This is good for casual gamers who want something fun that they can easily play for free.
Ultimate Naruto – a fun browser game based on the anime Naruto.
Part Three: Action MMO Games
Prime World merges persistent RPG hero development, PvP, PvE, story-driven battles and castle building. Hire, equip and train over 30 unique heroes between battles using collectible and upgradable talents, build a thriving economy in your city, and play together with your friends. You can even start your own clan and fight other clans. There are 8 gameplay modes: 5v5 Borderlands for that classic MOBA feel, 4v4 Dragonwald with a mix of PvE and PVP, Co-Op PvE against the monster of Priya, or even fight hordes of zombies. Prime World is available for PC and Mac.
World of Tanks
Honestly, here I am at a bit of a loss, what do I say? I mean, you control a tank and fight other players who also control tanks, its that simple! It’s fun and free, not much more to say here except that obviously this is for the type of gamer who enjoys competition. I really love this game. World of Tanks (WoT) is so extremely popular that it has broken records – 75 million registered players, 1.5 million concurrent players, and 2.5 million new players every month.
